Resume Paragraph

DPMI participants develop the skills needed to design and monitor a basic development project. Specifically, participants learn to conduct logical framwork analyses and create results frameworks, while working closely with stakeholder groups. Participants also acquire the necessary competence to create and apply social entrepreneurship strategies—including inter-organizational partnering—to  bring about meaningful and sustainable change in the lives of the very poor. Finally, in order to implement projects effectively, DPMI participants gain core skills for the training of trainers, for the resolution of conflicts through negotiation, and for helping stakeholder groups with their decision-making activities through skilled facilitation.

Dear MIIS Community,

As you have all heard, there was a devastating earthquake in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti last Tuesday. A number of MIIS alumni are on the ground in Haiti, including in the capital city. In particular, Mary Lineberger, a MIIS MBA grad and former Special Programs Manager, has been working in Port-Au-Prince with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), along with two other MIIS alumni. We have received word that they are fine, and busy assessing needs and working hard.

In an effort to support the relief operations in Haiti and our extended MIIS community, a number of us have contributed to CRS operations in Haiti via their online donation page. As Mary was an active member of the Monterey Peninsula community, we will also be working to inform the community about ways they can support her work, too.

Catholic Relief Services was ranked by NPR this week as one of the best relief organizations in dealing with humanitarian crises. Additionally, they have an “A” rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy. Their work is purely relief based, and not predicated on religious grounds. If you'd like to join us in contributing to CRS’s work in Haiti, the link is: http://www.crs.org/. There are also many other inspiring organizations doing relief work in Haiti currently, such as the Red Cross, Mercy Corps, and Partners in Health.

Our hopes and prayers are with the people of Haiti, and those like Mary working tirelessly to do whatever they can given this catastrophic situation.

Sincerely,

Amy Beck and Justin Maniar

Over the course of this week, you will have a chance to do some additional work on your development philosophies. On Thursday morning, you will once again share with colleagues the product of your evolving thinking. Please be sure to listen to and respond to the two newest VoiceThreads if you haven't done so already: the interview with USAID's new Administrator, and the story on health care in West Africa (which may also be of interest as you do your work for Module 3). ~Beryl

Thanks Willow for the note! I am going to look into it once I am 100% better; perhaps over the break next week. That is an awesome way to get involved locally, to impact globally.
Jennifer, I intern with an organization that bases its analysis off of the MIT Poverty Lab's stats. Check out Rising International, based in Santa Cruz. In partnering with woman artisans, where the Lab deems it "worst to live as a woman", they are helping women help themselves out of poverty through selling their crafts here in the States.
Such a cool org., and a way to see how the Lab is applied in real-world terms.
I look forward to seeing you guys tomorrow, and thank you for all the "get well" wishes,
Kiersten

Hello,
After some of the discussion in our group today, I wanted to share a reesource with you. Recently I have become fascinated by the work done through MIT’s Poverty Action Lab. While the work done through this institute is not development per se, they use economic models to evaluate the effectiveness of development projects.  This information can then be used by policy makers to influence policy decisions and future development. I encourage everyone to check out their work and their published results. I was particularly interested in both the study of deworming school children in Kenya, and the ongoing research into why farmers in developing nations have failed to utilize existing methods for increasing production.

The program is called Quick Media Converter. Video tutorials to help you use the program can be viewed here.

Hi everyone,

For those of us to whom facilitation skills and tools are new, there's a learning framework to put this into context:

1. UNconscious INcompetence - we don't know that we don't know so much about a topic
2. Conscious INcompetence - we then realize how much we don't know about the topic (I'm here I think!)
3. Conscious Competence - as we consciously learn more skills, we build competence, until, as we absorb the skills and they become natural, we gain...
4. UNconscious Competence. Where these competences are now a natural part of our usual being and we don't even notice them!

Enjoy and hope its helpful. Cheers - Marcella
--------

Per class today (Thursday, Module II) there are a few tools and concepts from the "Competency Assessment" that I would like to see more of, if not in class then at least some resources where I could find more information:

  • Exit Surveys
  • Designing & Implementing surveys
  • Management Models
  • Process Tools--is this the same thing we have gone over?
  • and, of course, dealing with resistance non-defensively

Thanks!

-Clare

I look forward to seeing you at Happy Hour later today. I have now finished posting my comments on your Table's submissions yesterday. These appear on the wiki page where you submitted your work.  Here are a couple of general comments:

  1. Congratulations to you. You showed great creativity and insight in your approach to the exercise. Furthermore, the quality of the feedback you offered one another was definitely of professional caliber.
  2. The rationale is supposed to justify your selection of activities (as opposed to summarizing what you hope to achieve through the activities). In other words, you should show why you chose these activities as opposed to some others.
  3. Some of you identified you target groups in very generic terms (e.g., "civil servants"). However, you should try to be as specific as possible about who is included in the target group (e.g., lower court judges).
  4. Finally, I want to remind you again to focus on quick wins and staying within your manageable interests, which, in this case was an NGO with a $1.5 project for a three-year period.
~Beryl

From Angel,

I posted this picture of a problem tree. I came across this while working in Guatemala. Guatemalan non-profit orgs would use an actual picture of a tree to collaboratively develop a problem tree with community groups.

Day 4 Module 2-1 Notes:

Participatory Development

Traditional:

* heads of dev. Projects and beneficiaries not at same table

* each does not take the other into consideration

* communities informed through formal meetings where officers justify but do not modify

* donors in consultation with central gov – budgets and time tables makes it difficult for communities

Definition Of Participation:

Depends On:

-the theory of development

Participation as a means

Participation as an end

Levels of Participation (UNDP)

Partnership

Decision-making – ask stakeholders/citizens to make decisions

Consensus Building – calling together relevant stakeholders and get them to agree

Consultation – talking with reps of ngos in the area and asking them what they think about your project

Information – sharing plans

Manipulation

Principles of Participation (UNDP)

* the primacy of people

* people’s knowledge and skills – its wasted/we’re losing something if we don’t tap into them

* must empower women

* autonomy as opposed to control

* local actions vs. local response

* spontaneity – we need to build it into our projects – flexibility to new info and what is working or not

Assessing Group Effectiveness: Do you think your quality of work is higher when working on your own or working within a group? Most thought group work produces a higher quality of work. However, many mentioned that this depends on the group dynamics, the quality of the group, and setting of the group or the topic/project being addressed by the group. Those who thought their individual work produced a higher quality of work mentioned that they needed time to process on their own, and that often times it is difficult to get everyone in a group on the same page.

******

I just wanted to add to the list of improvements; maybe an introductory training on effective group work strategies, to help the teamwork deliverables go a little smoother so we utilize our time most effectively. -karin

IMPROVEMENTS

HALF DAY MOVED TO FRIDAY AND SHOULD BE IN THE MORNING

MORE MOVEMENT, NOT SITTING IN THE SAME PLACE ALL THE TIME

MORE INTERACTION WITH MORE PEOPLE

ANNOUNCE DAILY AGENDA BEFORE WE BEGIN CLASS AND FOLLOW IT

PUNCTUALITY AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF CLASS

SMALLER GROUPS

AFTER EACH EXERCISE, HAVE SOME TIME TO REVIEW INDIVIDUALLY

MORE TIME TO GET USED TO TECHNOLOGY

AFTER WE DO AN EXERCISE, WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE AN EXAMPLE

MORE COFFEE, MORE BAGELS

MORE VARIATION

CHANGE THE ROOM (HARD TO HEAR, BAD INTERNET CONNECTION)

MAKE HOMEWORK EASY TO FIND IN ONE SPOT

MORE SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

MORE CONFIDENCE FROM PARTICIPANTS.

SHORTER DAYS (BUT DOES THAT MEAN YOU’RE WILLING TO HAVE AN EXTRA WEEK OF CLASS?)

******
Would it be helpful to move this Wall to be DPMI's home page/welcoming page? Since the "Welcome and Tech Tips" is already static, and this is a key page to the group's collaboration, I thought it may be beneficial to switch the two. As they say, the fewer clicks the better!  - Marcella
****

As we will be doing a considerable amout of group work, please remember to be respectful of all group members by making an effort to understand their thoughts and to incorporate ideas of all team members into the group assignment.

Below is a good example I found of the Evaluation Wheel from the Internet. -Karin

Purpose

Evaluate different aspects in a visual way.

Steps

Decide upon criteria for evaluating (not too many)

  • Ask each individual to draw a wheel with the same number of spokes as criteria chosen. The spokes should be marked with the various criteria. The spokes represent a scale with low or zero at the centre and high or 10 at the edge.
  • Individuals should assess the process according to the various criteria and score each criterion by marking the spoke at the right point along the scale.

    Example
